Liz Henman

Registered Psychologist

Liz is dedicated to creating collaborative therapeutic relationships, encouraging and teaching skills to help people build resilience and meaning in their lives.

Her current therapeutic approach is based on ACT, utilising components of other therapeutic techniques to create an eclectic, individualised experience. She has a holistic, strengths-based philosophy of therapy that encompasses all aspects of people’s lives, including health and wellbeing.

Liz has worked in a variety of settings with children, adolescents and adults with anxiety and mood disorders, as well as general life difficulties. She has been trained in CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Interpersonal Therapy, SFT, Mindfulness and DBT. Liz also has experience with diagnostic assessments and screening.

Liz tries her best to embody what she teaches. A good book on a rainy Sunday, paddle boarding or just soaking up the sun in the garden are some favourite activities. Exercise is top of the list too, but she also can't go past good, simple food, great company and a lovely glass of red to nourish the soul.

Modalities

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychotherapy approach that helps individuals accept their thoughts and feelings rather than trying to change them. ACT focuses on embracing emotions, distancing from unhelpful thoughts, and being present in the moment. It also emphasises identifying personal values and committing to actions aligned with those values.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a widely used, evidence-based therapy that focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviours to improve emotional wellbeing. It involves identifying and challenging distorted thoughts, implementing strategies to alter harmful behaviours, and developing practical problem-solving skills.

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a brief, goal-oriented approach that emphasises finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems. It helps clients envision their desired future, identify strengths, and make small changes to achieve their goals. SFT is effective for issues like depression, anxiety, and relationship problems, offering a quick and practical path to improvement.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) helps people manage intense emotions and improve coping skills. Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, it's now used for various mental health issues. DBT focuses on mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness, and is effective in reducing self-harm and emotional instability.
